One spot you may visit on your guided jet ski tour (if weather permits) is Hidden Island, a small rocky island dotted with a couple of scrawly trees nestled against the shore of towering Cecil Peak. Because it blends so well with the shoreline the island is invisible from Queenstown and this is how it got its name.
Hidden Island’s main claim to fame is that in the 1980s it was used as a location for the Island of Fin Raziel in the Ron Howard directed high fantasy film “Willow”.
In the film the island drew its name from the enchantress Fin Raziel, who was turned into a possum (an introduced Australian mammal that’s a major pest in New Zealand) and stranded there by her rival, the evil Queen Bavmorda. The transformed Raziel spent long years on the uninhabited island, until the Nelwyn hero and trainee magician Willow Ufgood came to rescue her.
In the movie the snowy Remarkables mountain range can be clearly seen in the background behind the island.
